Happier Working Lives Blog part 1

The programme is based on research by the  IHI Framework, Improving Joy at Work, who undertook a quality improvement (QI) initiative, measuring joy at work and how to improve joy at work. This showed that staff who are happy at work are more productive, there was less attrition and team identity was strong and resilient.

A further study by Gallup found that companies with happy and engaged employees had 70% fewer safety incidents. As a registered adult nurse this seems like a no brainer, we are increasing the positivity within teams which are transferred to our patients. My motto is ‘Happy staff = Happy patients’

The Happier Working Lives programme is designed to support the development of new initiatives and processes that will positively impact the health and wellbeing of our staff, creating happier, healthier, and more productive teams.  The programme consists of three externally facilitated workshops, delivered by NHS Elect, with support from myself and my Quality Improvement colleagues.  Teams will gain knowledge on how QI methodology can support and provide measures for their initiatives.

Over the three days the teams will cover

  • Understanding Happiness
  • Measuring Happiness
  • Thinking Creatively
  • Creating Happier Teams
  • Influencing Others
  • Celebrating Success

Our first cohort starts the 26th September, which I am super excited about, where we have a real mixture of teams from across Solent. Being relatively new to Solent I am looking forward to meeting them all and seeing what fabulous initiatives they come up with, with a bit of pinching with pride from the other teams and myself!

I have taken it upon myself to start the ball rolling within my department and have been sending round the Action for Happiness monthly calendars to my colleagues.  This starts the day on a positive note, setting the tone for the day.

Think about what you can do today to make someone feel good!!!!

Look out for the second part of this series of blogs, where I will update you on the programme.
