Becky Hocknell
Clinical Research Assistant
My responsibilities
I support the research nurses on their studies. I also assist with the recruitment of patients into studies and maintain clinical documentation.
My background
Whilst I was at university, I completed a summer internship with a research group at the University of Southampton and continued working for them part time during my final year. I graduated from Liverpool Hope University with a First class degree in Biological Sciences (BSc Hons) and joined the UoS research group full time for two years as their research facilitator. During this time I published two research papers and worked on the Paediatric Carriage Study which looks at the effects of the pneumococcal vaccine in children. It was through working on this study that I was introduced to the Academy and their fantastic work.
Why I love my job
The team are amazing! I joined during the COVID-19 lockdown and even though I’d never met any of my colleagues in person they were so lovely and supportive I felt like I settled right in!
My favourite part of the job is interacting with study participants and their families but also knowing that we are making a big difference to the quality of life for people worldwide.
More about me
I moved to Southampton from Cheshire two years ago to be with my partner who I met during my summers as a councillor for Camp America in Pennsylvania…and yes it is just like The Parent Trap!
I’m a creative person as I grew up in a florist so I always have a project on the go, whether it be painting, jigsaws, drawing…the list goes on! I also enjoy cultivating my tiny gravel garden into something greener.
