Mary Ramsay
Patient Representative
My role
I am a public representative in the Patient and Public Involvement group for Research and Improvement, 'Side-by-Side'.
My background
Having watched my husband loose his life to Dementia. I wanted to give something back, “do more” and get involved in research. Research in any field depends on patients and their families to improve methodology and studies.
I have taken part in a range of research studies and activities, including:
Healthy volunteer for clinical study for systemic inflammation in Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Alzheimer’s disease
Participant in Solent Smart pilot study
Providing ongoing support for Solent staff member with her research study about finding ways to make questionnaires more “dementia friendly” so people living with Dementia can express their choices
Involvement in study with Portsmouth university researcher as to whether people living with Dementia or patients with cognitive impairment deteriorate whilst in hospital
Ongoing service evaluation as to whether coloured tableware can improve meal time experience for people living with Dementia.
Why I love being in Side-by-Side
I enjoy sharing the common purpose of being involved in making a difference and contributing ideas that are respected and listened to by all. The Side-by-Side group helps to bring a patient and public perspective to thought processes at Solent. At same time we are fortunate the Research and Improvement team give us every opportunity to embrace it.
More about me
I retired two years ago after 29 years in DWP. Throughout that time I was big supporter of staff engagement and encouraging my colleagues to participate in “fun” events. I have for last 23 years been an active volunteer for Naomi House and Jacksplace hospices. For these activities along with my new interest in research I am so proud to be awarded British Empire Medal in 2017.
Through my association with Dementia, I now review new information literature and leaflets for the Alzheimer’s society.
I have 1 son, a police officer, living on Isle of Wight with his wife and my 13 year old granddaughter. When not sharing time with them I enjoy my holidays and the therapy my garden and walking brings.
