Solent as the ‘host NHS organisation’ for a grant (NIHR or other)
If you are planning to apply for funding to undertake your research you will need an NHS organisation to partner with you. The organisation will help with the submission of your application and ‘host’ the grant should your application be successful.

The Academy for Research and Improvement has a well proven track record of hosting research grants and fellowships. Since 2010 we have hosted four NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) grants, 1 NIHR Programme Development Grant and seven NIHR Programme Grants. We also host grants funded by a number of charities and a range of clinical academic fellowships. This gives us a strong pedigree to sit along side our established research infrastructure as a successful host for your grant.

As a potential host we are available to work alongside you to complete your application and can support you by identifying clinical or academic co-applicants or partners. We can also advise on the clinical relevance and feasibility of the research proposal within health and social care services to ensure success of the project.

The Academy has experts in the involvement of patients and the public in research and can also advise on costing the application in line with the Department of Health document ‘Attributing revenue costs of health and social care Research & Development the NHS (AcoRD).

As the host for a grant we are responsible for managing the contract for the research with the funder and managing any subcontracts with any organisations collaborating on the research. We will also report on expenditure to the funder and ensure all legal, financial and intellectual property arrangements are in place.

Acting as a host for research grants earns us Research Capability Funding from the NIHR. This annual funding is based on the NIHR grant income we received from hosting grants in the previous year. We use this income to support the development and writing of new research funding applications and to provide the resources to support the ongoing development of clinically important health care research. We share this funding with external organisations that support the development of research within Solent. Applications for Research Capability funding are considered annually.
